How to Make a Tiny Desk AI Video with Your Photos
Create an original 15-second, silent 9:16 AI desk concert: upload a lead portrait, optionally add keys and sax, check credits and share.

Making a Tiny Desk AI video is a three-step workflow: prepare portraits, cast the band, render and share. The whole thing takes about five minutes, and no video-editing experience is required — the generation is done for you, and the result is an original, fictional desk-concert scene built around your photos.
If you're wondering what the meme even is, start with What Is the Tiny Desk AI Meme? — then come back here.
Step 1: Prepare your portraits
The meme is a casting joke, so casting is 90% of the quality.
- You need exactly one clear Lead photo — that's the only required input. The Lead sings at the center microphone and owns the finale, so pick the photo with the most personality. A visible smile or an intense stare both work; the format thrives on commitment.
- Keys and Sax are optional bonus slots. Add one photo each for the keyboard player and the saxophonist if you want to cast your friends as the full band. Leave them empty and AI musicians fill the back row.
- Use photos you're allowed to use. Your own picture, or photos of adults who agreed to appear in a parody. Don't use photos of celebrities, athletes, or politicians.
- Format basics. JPG, PNG, or WebP, under 10 MB per image. Front-facing portraits beat profiles; good lighting beats filters.
Step 2: Cast the band and confirm credits
With photos in hand, open the generator and assign the portraits to their roles:
- Upload the Lead portrait into the required slot. The preview appears immediately; you can replace or remove it at any time.
- Optionally fill Keys and Sax. Each optional slot shows the same preview/replace/remove controls. Two friends plus you is the classic formation; solo lead is the "main character" version.
- Check the credit estimate. The button shows the live estimate for your cast before anything is charged — one flat generation cost regardless of how many roles you fill. The number shown on the button is the authoritative quote; anything printed in a tutorial (including this one) may be outdated.
- Confirm the parody statement. The final checkbox confirms you have the rights to these photos and understand the result is a fictional AI parody, not a real performance. This is required before generation.
- Press the button. The job enters the queue and the page shows live progress.
Step 3: Render and share
When the render finishes, you get a downloadable MP4:
- ~15 seconds, 9:16 vertical, no watermark. Sized for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts exactly as the meme circulates.
- The export is silent by design. The original recording of "Outstanding" belongs to its rights holders and is not included. Instead, add the song when you post: search for "Outstanding" by The Gap Band inside your platform's licensed music library, and the app attaches it natively. Availability varies by country, account type, and the platform's music licensing.
- Label the video. Keep the AI-generated or parody label on when you publish. A viewer who knows it's AI from second one can enjoy the joke instead of fact-checking it.
- Post it where the format lives. The meme circulates in short-video feeds; vertical and hook-first wins.
Photo tips and common errors
Photos that generate well:
- One person per photo, face clearly visible, no heavy occlusion (sunglasses, hat brims over the eyes, hands)
- Even front lighting; sharp focus; neutral or expressive faces both work
- Roughly head-and-shoulders framing beats full-body distance
Photos that generate poorly:
- Group shots (the model can't tell who's the star)
- Heavy filters or beauty apps that reshape the face
- Screenshots of screenshots — compression artifacts compound
When things go wrong:
- "Use JPG, PNG or WebP under 10 MB" — re-export the photo; some phones save HEIC by default.
- Submit timed out? Check the job status before resubmitting. A timeout doesn't mean failure — the task may already be running, and submitting twice can burn credits twice.
- Generation failed? Failed renders are not charged; the estimate refreshes and you can retry, usually with a better-lit Lead photo.
- Result looks "off"? The single biggest lever is the Lead photo quality. The second is choosing a photo whose expression matches the joke (committed beats blank).
